Charles Brenton Lawrence was born in Salem, Virginia in April of 1991. His musical career began when he received a toy saxophone for his birthday and, consequently, taught himself to play the Star Wars theme on it. After this occurrence, his parents enrolled him into violin lessons, which he took throughout his youth. After playing saxophone in school band, Lawrence began to play guitar. The guitar piqued his interest in both playing and writing jazz music. He soon began sitting in with musicians local to the Salem area. It was around this time that Lawrence graduated from high school and began studying classical guitar at Pfeiffer University; a small liberal arts college just north of Charlotte, North Carolina. During his time at Pfeiffer, Lawrence gained knowledge in theory and composition, as well as guitar performance. He took these skills with him as he began his current studies towards a Master of Music in Composition at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His music is known for its distinctive qualities, catchy melodies, and its ability to paint a picture with a pallet of sounds.
